In the high-altitude landscapes of Kashmir, glaciologist Ulfat Majeed has mapped over 330 glacial lakes — vast pools of meltwater forming as glaciers retreat due to climate change, raising the risk of outburst floods. What makes this most alarming is that the communities living below have no idea the danger exists. One of those communities is Ganderbal, Ulfat’s home district.
In a landscape with frequent communication blackouts and travel restrictions, Ulfat works to protect a community that has never fully understood why her work matters, or why it is worth the risks she takes to do it. Her own family has struggled with the same question. She is one of the few women doing this work in the region, balancing time in the field with being a new mother.
Where We Are
Above the Silence is currently in active development. We’re working closely with Ulfat to shape the film around her ongoing research and long-term goals. The team is pursuing grant funding to support the next stage of research and production, with principal photography planned for 2027.
